How many words are in the Quran?

By Ayah Explorer · Updated 18 October 2026

Short answer

The Quran has about 77,430 words. Classical scholars counted 77,439, and modern computer counts give 77,429 to 77,430; some word lists use about 77,800 because they count joined words differently. All of those words come from fewer than 5,000 different dictionary words (about 4,600).

Why the counts are slightly different

Every count covers the same text. The small differences come from how a "word" is counted. Arabic often joins short words to the next one, so one written word can contain two or three parts. For example, some counters treat fi al-sama' ("in the sky") as two words and others as one. Depending on that choice, totals land between about 77,400 and 77,800.

How many different words are there?

Far fewer. Many of those 77,430 words are the same word used again and again. Counted as dictionary words (one entry for qala, "he said", however it is spelled), the Quran uses about 4,600 different words. Counted as every different spelling, including attached letters and endings, it is about 19,000.

Why this matters for learners

A small set of words does most of the work. ٱللَّه (Allah) alone appears about 2,700 times. That is why learning the most common words first is such an efficient way to start understanding the Quran: each word you learn keeps coming back. See the 100 most common words in the Quran, with meanings.
